#4 Irish Comeback Falls Short Against #3 Georgetown

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 4 Fighting Irish fell to No. 3 Georgetown by a final score of 16-11 at Arlotta Stadium on Saturday afternoon, suffering their first loss of the season.

The Irish attack was led by Morrison Mirer, who scored four goals, matching his career high for the grad student. Eric Dobson and Chris Kavanagh each added two goals and Pat Kavanagh led the team in assists with two.

On the defensive end, Jason Reynolds had a big performance, causing three turnovers and scooped up five ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The visitors got off to a great start on Saturday, building an 11-2 advantage with just over seven minutes left in the first half. The Hoyas used two 5-0 runs to open up the lead.

The Irish managed to score the final two goals of the half to trim the Georgetown lead to 11-4 heading into the halftime break.

Notre Dame carried that momentum into the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 5-0 to make it a two-goal game at 11-9 heading into the final 15 minutes of play. Mirer erupted for three goals in the third to spark the Irish attack.

The Irish struck first in the fourth frame, their eighth straight, to cut the Hoyas’ lead to just one goal at 11-10 with 11:46 left in the game. However, Georgetown answered by scoring on the next possession to push the lead back to 12-10 and then scored four of the final five goals to come away with the 16-11 victory.

NOTRE DAME NOTES

  • The Irish outshot the Hoyas 52-38 in the contest and had just nine turnovers in the game.
  • Mirer posted four goals in a game for the third time in his career.
  • Notre Dame’s defense forced 14 turnovers and the Irish scooped up 37 ground balls.
  • Will Angrick scored the first goal of his career.
