Bischel Named Richter Semifinalist

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Serving as the University of Notre Dame hockey team’s starting netminder for the past two seasons, Ryan Bischel has once more been named a Mike Richter Award semifinalist, presented annually to the top NCAA Division I men’s hockey goaltender as announced by the Hockey Coaches Association Wednesday. The Big Ten Conference’s reigning Goaltender of the Year recipient, Bischel is one of two netminders recognized for the second time of their career.

The graduate student from Medina, Minnesota has earned the nod in net for all 30 Irish contests this season, posting a 14-14-2 record while boasting one of the top save percentages at .927 – good for fourth in the country. With 920 saves in just under 1,800 minutes played this season, Bischel leads the nation in the category and owns a 2.46 goals against average.

Bischel was also named a semifinalist for the award a season ago, becoming just the second netminder in program history to receive the honor multiple times. Two Irish goaltenders have previously been named semifinalists for the Mike Richter Award, including Cal Petersen (2017) and Cale Morris (2018 & 2019).
