PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The University of Notre Dame has captured the 2000-01 BIG EAST Conference Commissioner’s Trophy for men’s athletics as well as the trophy for women’s athletics.? It is the fifth consecutive season that the Fighting Irish have earned both trophies and it is the sixth consecutive title for the Notre Dame men’s program.

The Notre Dame women were paced by first-place finishes in soccer, volleyball, swimming & diving, tennis, and softball as well as a tie for the regular season women’s basketball title.? The men won the baseball regular season crown and were helped by a first-place divisional showing in basketball.? The Irish finished second in tennis and third in indoor track & field.

This marks the eighth time that the same school has garnered both the men’s and women’s trophies, though Notre Dame is only the second school to earn the distinction.? Villanova won both titles in 1982-83, ’83-84, and ’86-87, but ND is the only school to win five consecutive men’s and women’s trophies.? The Irish took at least a share of the title in a league-best eight sports.

In the men’s standings, Notre Dame finished 17.5 points ahead of Georgetown.? The Hoyas were the indoor and outdoor track & field champions and finished second at the cross country championship. The Notre Dame women tallied 33 more points than second-place Connecticut.? The Huskies earned the regular season field hockey title, a share of the regular season basketball crown, and a divisional title in women’s soccer.

The men’s trophy was first awarded in 1979-80, the league’s inaugural year, while the women’s trophy was first awarded in ’82-83.? Point totals for each sport are based upon regular season finish when the BIG EAST conducts round-robin competition (field hockey, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, lacrosse) or on championship finish when there is no in-season play.? In sports where divisional play is in place (women’s soccer, men’s basketball), point totals are awarded based on overall league winning percentage at the conclusion of the regular season.
