Irish Sweep DePaul, Butler And UIC To Remain Unbeaten At Home

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team extended its home record to a perfect 7-0 over the weekend, taking down DePaul on Friday and both Butler and UIC in a doubleheader on Sunday. The Irish victories now bring the team to an overall record of 8-2 at the conclusion of non conference play.

In Friday’s matchup, Notre Dame raced to a 1-0 lead as the doubles tandem of Page Freeman and Nibi Ghosh took down their Blue Demon opponents on the top court 6-1, quickly followed by a 6-3 win by Julia Andreach and Akari Matsuno at No. 2. The momentum continued as the Fighting Irish took all six first sets in singles. Andreach was the first off the court with a 6-0, 6-1 rout at No. 2, followed by dominant victories by Matsuno and Bojana Pozder on courts six and three, respectively. The remaining matches were abandoned as the Irish got their sixth team win of the season with a score of 4-0.

Sunday’s action began against the Butler Bulldogs with another doubles point secured, this time led by Andreach and Carrie Beckman at the top spot and Matsuno and Yashna Yellayi on court three. Once again the Irish took each first set, and it was Ghosh, Beckman, and junior Kate Bellia that put the second, third and fourth points on the board for ND. The remaining matches were abandoned, each with a one set lead for the Irish.

In the weekend’s final contest, Andreach and Beckman once again were first to secure a doubles victory, taking down UIC’s top duo 6-1. Moments later, Ghosh and Pozder blanked their opponents 6-0 at No. 3 to give Notre Dame the 1-0 lead. For the third straight time, the Irish captured all six first sets. The junior trio of Beckman, Ghosh, and Bellia once again secured the team victory with straight set wins, with remaining matches to be played out. Matsuno, Pozder, and Yellayi each fought out tough wins to end the day with a 7-0 sweep.
