Irish Swimming & Diving Name 2022-23 Captains

Nine student-athletes will represent Notre Dame swimming and diving this season as captains, head swimming coach Chris Lindauer and head diving coach Mark Bradshaw announced on Sunday. There are five women and four men, and all of the newly minted captains are seniors.

  • Sarah Boyle
    • A jack of all trades, Boyle is a staple in the butterfly, backstroke and IM events for Notre Dame. Always a team player, Boyle is able to swim any distance when called upon. Outside of the pool, Boyle has made the ACC Academic Honor Roll and serves as the ACC Advisory Group student-athlete representative. She hails from outside of Washington, D.C., in Virginia.
  • Sam Gillis
    • Gillis, a diver, is back for her fourth season after battling injuries last year. Despite the hiccups and minimal training, the North Carolinian was able to ultimately qualify for Zones. Gillis has notched several third place finishes in various dual meets during her time at Notre Dame.
  • Ellie Jew
    • Jew ranks in the top 10 in three events in program history: sixth in the 100 breast (1:00.68), sixth in the 200 breast (2:13.07) and 10th in the 200 IM (2:00.30). A two-time ACC Championships qualifier, the senior earned a spot in the B Final last year in the 100 breaststroke. Jew began her college career at Arizona and is from Portland, Ore.
  • Meaghan Lyons
    • A breaststroke and IM specialist for Notre Dame, Lyons hails from Hilton Head, S.C. As a junior last year, Lyons won the 200 breaststroke in a dual meet against UIC and made the finals in both breaststroke events at the Ohio State Invitational.
  • Sydney Winters
    • Like Lyons, Winters won an event (200 IM) for the Irish against UIC last year and was a two-time finalist at the Ohio State Invitational (100 and 200 backstroke). The Western Massachusetts native was the 2020 recipient of the Program Beeler-Hipp Freshman Award.

On the men’s side, four members of the team will spend their final season leading the Irish.

  • Nick Chase
    • A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Chase is a butterfly and backstroke specialist. He posted a best time of 49.38 in the 100 backstroke last season against UIC, which was enough to win the event for the Irish. Chase has also been a staple on Notre Dame relays while in South Bend, particularly during his freshman year.
  • Will Rains
    • The lone diver of the group, Rains is from Los Angeles. He participated in the ACC Championships last year, and he has played a critical role for Notre Dame in dual meets over the last few seasons. Additionally, he was the 2021 Weight Room Warrior Award winner for the men’s diving program.
  • Thacher Scannell
    • As a junior, Scannell swam the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle for Notre Dame at the ACC Championships. He also posted multiple wins in dual meets throughout the duration of the regular season. A native of Stamford, Conn., Scannell began his collegiate career at Davidson where he set the school records in the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle events as well as in the 800 freestyle relay.
  • Cason Wilburn
    • Wilburn, a Virginia native, is incredibly well-rounded. Last season, the 6-4 senior was an NCAA qualifier, a member of the All-ACC Academic Team and top six in for the ACC Service Award. He won the ACC UNITE Award this year. Wilburn’s name peppers the all-time Top Performers list at Notre Dame. He ranks fifth in the 50 free (19.67), sixth in the 100 free (43.22), ninth in the 200 free (1:35.45) and third in the 100 fly (46.28).

The Irish will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m., at home against Louisville. The Cardinals are ranked 10th in the country on both the men’s and women’s side.
