NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Monogram Club awarded postgraduate scholarships to University of Notre Dame senior Monogram winners Kelly Curran (Bloomington, Ill.) and Ted Glasnow (Newhall, Calif.) at the 13th annual O.S.C.A.R.S. on Wednesday night in Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.
In recognition of outstanding academic achievement, service, leadership, and potential for success in postgraduate study, each student-athlete receives a one-time, nonrenewable grant of $5,000 to attend graduate school.
Curran (’14, cross country/track & field) and Glasnow (’14, track & field) were presented their awards by Monogram Club executive director Brant Ust (’00, baseball), as well as Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) Monogram Club Liaison Logan Renwick (’14, track & field).
Curran, a science-business major with a minor in theology, holds a 3.76 grade point average and has been accepted to a number of medical schools.
A standout on both the women’s cross country and track & field squads, she earned first team All-American honors as a member of the indoor distance medley relay (DMR) during each of the past two seasons. Curran has also garnered numerous all-regional and all-conference recognitions, both in the BIG EAST and Atlantic Coast Conference.
In 2012 and 2013, Curran was named to the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team, a distinction for student-athletes who maintain at least a 3.25 GPA and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region’s top 15.
In addition to representing her team as a member of SAAC and Notre Dame’s Rosenthal Leadership Academy, Curran has volunteered with students in the Boys & Girls Club at LaSalle Elementary, and participated in the Read To A Child program at Perley Fine Arts Academy.
She is a two-time recipient of the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley Rockne Student-Athlete Award as a member of the cross country team.
“[Kelly’s] like a lot of our kids, in that her work ethic doesn’t change from venue to venue. She’s got a great work ethic here on the track, and it’s the same in her academics as well,” head women’s cross country coach Tim Connelly (’83) said. “She’s a kid that’s very hard working, very driven, had the goal from day one to go to medical school, and she’s been able to achieve that.”
Curran was also one of seven recipients of Notre Dame’s prestigious Byron V. Kanaley Award at the 2014 O.S.C.A.R.S. The Kanaley Award has been presented since 1926 to senior student-athletes who have been most exemplary as both students and leaders.
Glasnow will graduate from Notre Dame’s College of Arts & Letters with a degree in political science and the Program of Liberal Studies, and plans to attend law school.
A multi-event athlete on the Irish track & field team, Glasnow has competed in the heptathlon and decathlon. He boasts a 3.6 cumulative grade point average and was a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic team, while also attaining that honor from the ACC during the 2013-14 indoor season. Like Curran, Glasnow has also been a member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic team.
“He’s one of those guys that you’re going to get 100% out of him every single time that he’s on the track, and I imagine he’s the same way off the track. He’s a pretty smart kid, and he’s very driven to do very, very well,” jumps and multi-events coach Jim Garnham said.
“This is my fifth year with him. He redshirted a year because he had elbow surgery, and just getting to know him over the five years, he’s definitely one of those kids that is going to be missed next year.”
Away from the track, Glasnow has served as president of Special Olympics Notre Dame since 2010, and played an integral role in the club being named Notre Dame Student Club of the Year during its inaugural year. Through his involvement with Special Olympics, he has coached track & field, basketball and soccer.
The Monogram Club postgraduate scholarships have been given to one male and one female student-athlete since the 2008-09 academic year. Below is a list of student-athletes who have earned this distinction since the program’s inception.
