Klenke Named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

Freshman off to a hot start with the Irish

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week on Tuesday and didn’t take long for Notre Dame women’s soccer freshman Leah Klenke to earn her first honor. The Houston native picked up the defensive award in just the second week of the season.

Klenke started at left-wing back in both shutout victories this week as the Irish knocked off No. 19 Saint Louis on the road 2-0, then rolled to a 4-0 victory over Illinois at home. Klenke and the rest of the Irish backline only allowed four shots on goal for the week – one at Saint Louis and three against Illinois – it marked their first shots on goal allowed this season.

Offensively, Klenke shown bright as well. Her shot on target against the Billikens in the second half led to Sophia Fisher’s insurance goal. Then a few days later against the Illini, Klenke scored a superb goal that she floated from outside the box on the left side, over the keeper’s head, and into the far corner of the net.

Klenke is currently tied for second on the team in points with five.
