IRISH EMBRACE SECOND CHANCE VERSUS TOP-FIVE VIRGINIA
The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (13-11, 3-8 ACC) hits the road for the challenge of facing No. 4/4 Virginia (21-2, 9-2) at John Paul Jones Arena (Raycom Sports, 2 p.m. ET) Saturday afternoon.

- Virginia then won the next nine meetings in the series before the Irish broke through for a 71-58 victory in the 2017 ACC Semifinals to earn the program’s second ACC championship game berth in its first four seasons in the conference.
- Saturday marks the second of two meetings with Virginia in ACC play this year, as the Cavaliers claimed an 82-55 victory over Notre Dame on January 26, 2019.
MR. MOONEY ONE OF SIX MAJOR CONFERENCE PLAYERS AVERAGING A DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Junior forward John Mooney (dubbed Mr. Mooney by Notre Dame Basketball Radio Network Analyst Zach Hillesland) has compiled 15 double-doubles this season that have pushed his season averages to 14.2 (ppg) and 10.8 (rpg) – the only ACC player averaging a double-double. He joins five other players across the country from a major college basketball conference to average 10+ points and 10+ rebounds per game.

MOONEY BOASTS NOTABLE ACC-ONLY REBOUND AVERAGE
Entering this weekend’s conference action, John Mooney is averaging 12.6 rebounds per game in ACC play. Should he maintain that average, he would be the first ACC player to average over 12.4 rebounds per game since TIm Duncan recorded a 14.9 average in 1997.
If Mooney can keep is rebound per game average above 12.0 – he would be the first ACC player to accomplish that since Sean May (12.3) in 2005.

HUBB MOVING UP THE ROOKIE ASSIST BOARD
Freshman Prentiss Hubb has been the main ball handler for the Irish throughout his rookie season and paces the team with 86 assists. He is the ninth true freshman since the class became eligible to play to post 80-or-more assists during their rookie season.
Should Hubb maintain his 3.6 assist-per-game average, he could become the fourth Mike Brey-era rookie to reach 100 assists in a season.

* – Virginia repeated with Maryland in 2013-14
Each season since 2013-14, ACC teams have faced their designated home-and-home opponents each year, two other league opponents on a rotating home-and-home basis, five opponents on the road only and five opponents at home only.
NOTRE DAME AT VIRGINIA – BY THE NUMBERS
1 |
There is only one player in the country averaging 10-plus points, 10-plus rebounds and shooting better than .400 from three-point range – Notre Dame junior John Mooney (14.2 ppg, 10.8 rpg, .404 3FG%). |
3 |
John Mooney is on pace to become the third Notre Dame player in the past four seasons to lead the ACC in rebounding in all games (currently at the top of the league with a 10.8 average). Zach Auguste (10.7, 2016) and Bonzie Colson (10.1, 2017) also led the ACC in rebounding. Should Mooney maintain his league-leading status, Notre Dame would become the first ACC program to have a player lead the league in rebounding three out of four seasons (and three out of six since ND joined the ACC) since Tim Duncan did it three straight years for Wake Forest from 1995-97. |
8.6 |
Scoring 5.6 points per game last season, John Mooney has increased his scoring per game 8.6 points per game this season – the second-best improvement in the ACC (Louisville’s Jordan Nwora is first at 12.1). |
9 |
Freshman Prentiss Hubb has become one of nine true freshman since 1972-73 to reach 80 or more assists in their rookie season at Notre Dame. Hubb currently leads the team with 86 assists (see page 6 for more). |
9.6 |
With a 9.6 average, Notre Dame is fifth in the country in turnovers committed per game. |
12 |
The 69-59 victory over Georgia Tech on February 10 improved Notre Dame to 12-0 at home against its two designated annual home-and-home ACC opponents (Georgia Tech, Boston College). |
12.6 |
John Mooney is averaging 12.6 rebounds per game in ACC competition – one of just five major-conference players to average 10 or more rebounds per game in league action. Should he maintain that average, he would be the first ACC player to average over 12.5 rebounds per game since Tim Duncan (14.9) in 1997 (see page 5 for more). |
13.3 |
Notre Dame is committing just 13.3 personal fouls per game – the lowest average total in the country as of February 11. The Irish are ahead of Loyola Chicago (13.8) and Dayton (13.9). |
14 |
John Mooney leads the ACC (no other player has more than nine) and is tied for eighth in the country with 15 double-doubles (he is fourth in double-doubles among major conference players). He also paces the ACC in 10-rebound performances with 17 this season. |
19 |
Notre Dame is 19-5 against its two designated home-and-home annual opponents in ACC play (12-0 vs. Boston College, 7-5 vs. Georgia Tech). As of February 11, that mark leads the ACC since the Irish joined the conference for the 2013-14 season (see page 6 for more). |
21 |
Junior Nikola Djogo made the most of his first start of the season at Boston College (2/2/19), leading the Irish with a career-high 21 points on seven-of-10 shooting with four three-point field goals. Djogo entered the game averaging 1.9 points-per-game in 2018-19. |
200 |
John Mooney is the latest in a long line of juniors to make a significant leap in statistical performance during their third year in the Notre Dame program. He is on pace to become the ninth player to increase their scoring (among other statistics) 200 points or more during their junior season. See page 12 for a full breakdown. |

Minutes played by the Notre Dame freshman class (Robby Carmody, Chris Doherty, Dane Goodwin, Prentiss Hubb, Nate Laszewski) – the most for any rookie class in the Mike Brey era. It is the sixth-most at Notre Dame since freshmen became eligible in 1972-73. |
