PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – After four days of battling and representing the Notre Dame men’s golf program at the US Amateur, sophomore Davis Chatfield‘s run in the tournament came to an end in the Round of 32 of match play.
Competing against 312 individuals at the start of the tournament, Chatfield started strong in stroke play, shooting a 71 at Spyglass Hill, followed by a 74 at Pebble Beach, thus finishing among the top-64 in the field to qualify for match play.
There, Chatfield cruised by Ryan Smith in the Round of 64, not conceding a single hole to win six-up with four left to play. However, Chatfield’s tremendous run at the US Amateur then came to a close on Thursday when Stewart Hagestad advanced four up with three to play.
“I certainly took a lot of positives out of the week as a whole,” Chatfield explained. “It didn’t end the way I wanted to but it was cool to make it to the round of 32 against the best amateurs in the world. Being a part of the tournament was special with my whole family there & both of my brothers on the bag. You can’t get a better venue than Pebble Beach & Spyglass, the views there were absolutely incredible.
“I can use this tournament as a big momentum boost going into the fall season. I know I can hang with the big names and I think this week I showed it. I wish I could’ve played a little better [on Thursday] but that’s how golf is. I’m looking forward to what lies ahead.”
