#1 Irish Drop OT Heartbreaker To #19 Georgetown, 11-10

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish suffered their first defeat of the season on Sunday, falling to No. 19 Georgetown in overtime by a score of 11-10.

The Irish attack was paced by Jake Taylor and Devon McLane, who each finished with two goals. Pat Kavanagh chipped in a goal and two assists, including the game-tying goal with under a minute left to send the game to overtime.

Junior Will Lynch had the best game of any Notre Dame player, winning 15-of-22 faceoffs and scooping up seven ground balls on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The opening 30 minutes of play was a defensive battle, as Hoyas held a 4-3 lead at the half. The Irish scored the opening goal off a beautiful behind-the-back finish from Jake Taylor after he scooped up a loose ball. Georgetown answered with three straight to end the first quarter and go up 3-1.

Notre Dame then scored the first two goals of the second stanza to level it at 3-3 off goals from Taylor and Devon McLane but the Hoyas scored with just over four minutes left in the half to take a one-goal lead into the break.

Georgetown struck first in the third quarter to extend its lead to 5-3 before the Irish answered back with goals from McLane and Eric Dobson to level the score at 5-5 with just under nine minutes to play in the third quarter.

From there it was tight the rest of the way as the game was tied at scores of 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10. Kavanagh scored the final goal of regulation out of a timeout with 39 seconds left on the clock to make the score 10-10 and send it to the extra period.

The Irish won the opening faceoff of the overtime session and managed to get two shots off but neither found the back of the net and then the Hoyas scored on the ensuing possession to escape with the 11-10 victory.
