BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A Patrick Doody goal in the 19th minute was the difference as No. 8 Indiana topped No. 1 Notre Dame, 1-0, on Wednesday evening at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The setback snapped Notre Dame’s season-best three-game win streak. It was the fourth time this season the Fighting Irish (8-4-2) were held without a goal.
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Patrick Wall made a career-high nine saves for the Fighting Irish. Indiana’s Colin Webb stopped all three Notre Dame shots on frame. The Hoosiers (9-2-3) outshot the Fighting Irish 10-1 in the opening half and 21-9 for the entire match.
“We struggled to get the ball into Indiana’s half of the field in the first half,” Notre Dame head coach Bobby Clark said. “Indiana made it uncomfortable for us in the opening period with how they pressured us. They pressured us very hard and it was difficult for us to find a rhythm and connect passes.”
Doody’s goal came on Indiana’s third shot of the night. The Hoosier defender sent a corner kick into the box and the ball deflected off the far post and went into the goal. The Hoosiers had seven corner kicks, while the Fighting Irish and two.
“It was a strange goal to win a game on,” Clark said. “It was an in-swinging corner kick that hit the post and bounced before going in.”
Notre Dame’s first shot of the contest came in the 22nd minute off the foot of forward Vince Cicciarelli, yet Webb was there for the save. Freshmen forwards Jeffrey Farina and Jon Gallagher came on at halftime and they both had attempts saved by Webb. Farina finished the match with a team-best three shots.
“We opened the second half very well and got them on their heels,” Clark added. “We had some good chances. Jeffrey Farina and Jon Gallagher came on and did well. We had the ball whiz by the goal a few times and we were inches away from getting a touch on it. I thought we had the better of the chances in the second half. Indiana had some shots, but they were from far away.”
The Fighting Irish return to Atlantic Coast Conference action Saturday when they play host to Virginia Tech. The match is slated for 7 p.m. (ET) at Alumni Stadium and it can be seen live on WatchND.tv.
Notre Dame is in sole possession of first place in the ACC standings. The Irish have 13 points, while fellow Coastal Division member North Carolina has 12. Virginia Tech is in fourth place in the Coastal Division (8 points). Clemson, Louisville and Syracuse all lead the Atlantic Division with 12 points each.
