NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Sophomore forward Adriana Leon (Maple, Ontario/The Country Day School) had two goals and an assist, while senior All-America forward/tri-captain Melissa Henderson (Garland, Texas/Berkner) and sophomore midfielder Mandy Laddish (Lee’s Summit, Mo./Lee’s Summit) each added a goal and two assists, sparking No. 10/7 Notre Dame to a 7-1 rout of Tulsa on Friday night at the 19th annual Notre Dame adidas Invitational at Alumni Stadium. The seven goals not only set a new tournament record, but also were the most scored by the Fighting Irish in a single match since the 2008 season opener (a 7-0 win over Michigan at old Alumni Field).
Senior defender/tri-captain Jessica Schuveiller (Plano, Texas/Plano West), sophomore midfielder Rebecca Twining (Houston, Texas/Second Baptist School) and senior midfielder Ellen Jantsch (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa’s Academy) also scored goals for the Fighting Irish, with Twining becoming the third Notre Dame player in as many matches to score her first career goal.
Notre Dame (2-2) outshot Tulsa by a staggering 39-4 margin, as the Fighting Irish piled up their largest shot total since Aug. 27, 2000 (49 shots vs. Detroit). In addition, Notre Dame collected a 16-2 edge in shots on goal and earned all four corner kicks in the match. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Voigt (Middleburg, Fla./St. John’s Country Day School) worked the first 45 minutes and did not make a save while claiming her first collegiate win. Junior netminder Maddie Fox (San Jose, Calif./Leigh) played the entire second half and made one save.
Rachel Garcia scored the lone goal for the Golden Hurricane (3-1) just six seconds into the match, but it would be the lone bright spot for Tulsa during the night. Goalkeeper Katie Bykowski was busy throughout the evening, registering nine saves, including a handful of sparkling stops that kept the final margin from being even more lopsided.
After Garcia’s first-minute score directly from the opening kickoff sent murmurs through the overflow crowd at Alumni Stadium, Notre Dame responded with an impressive display of firepower. Schuveiller started the deluge at the 3:41 mark, teeing up a free kick from just outside the top of the penalty area and burying it inside the left post for her first goal of the season.
Leon then stepped to center stage, posting her first career two-goal match with a pair of scores less than five minutes apart. The first came at 8:12 of the first half and began with a pinpoint left-side cross from Laddish that sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Tucker (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) headed off the crossbar. The rebound dropped to the right side of the six-yard box, where Leon pounced on the loose ball and hammered it high into the empty net.
In the 14th minute, the Canadian striker was at her opportunistic self once again. Sophomore defender Kecia Morway (Lake Villa, Ill./Lakes Community) started the sequence with a well-weighted chip for Henderson inside the top edge of the box. Henderson spun off her defender and cracked a rising shot that rocked the crossbar, and freshman forward Lauren Bohaboy (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) drove the rebound off a defender to the right side of the six-yard area. Leon found herself in the right spot at the right time, and drilled home her second goal of the night (13:07).
Leon’s score also kicked off a stretch that saw Henderson factor into three consecutive Fighting Irish goals. After getting the secondary assist on Leon’s brace, Henderson found the back of the net herself, calmly recovering after her penalty kick try ricocheted off the post and back to her on the spot. The veteran quickly one-timed the rebound past a helpless Bykowski and Notre Dame had its fourth goal just past the midpoint of the first half (22:53).
Henderson capped her spree in the opening half-hour with a precise cross from the left flank and carved through the heart of the Tulsa defense. Twining expertly timed her run into the area and was rewarded with a point-blank header that officially opened her collegiate scoring account at 29:47.
The second half saw more of the same, as Notre Dame outshot the Golden Hurricane, 20-3 in the final 45 minutes. Leon would pick up her fifth point of the night, threading the needle with a beautiful angled pass in the attacking third and giving Laddish plenty of space for a long-range blast that clipped the underside of the crossbar on its way to pay dirt (67:59).
Jantsch wrote the final scoring chapter for the Fighting Irish, running on to a sharp cross from junior forward Lindsay Brown (Newport Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) and driving home a short-range header at 84:59.
