NOTRE DAME, Indiana — The United States Fencing Coaches Association has announced the 2020 NCAA Fencing All-American teams and All-Region teams and the Irish were well represented on both accounts. The All-Region awards are new this season to honor fencing student-athletes for their performances at NCAA Regionals.
In lieu of the NCAA Championships being canceled due to COVID-19, all 12 Notre Dame student-athletes that qualified for NCAA’s received All-American status from the USFCA. Seven received first team honors while five were named to the second team.
Alessandro Contreras, Stefani Deschner, Andrew Machovec, Marcello Olivares and Jared Smith earned their first career All-American honors. This was Kara Linder’s second career honor but the first time she was named to the first team. Amanda Sirico ended her career with her fourth first team All-American honor. All five second team honorees (Miriam Grady, Harrison Kimatian, Valentin Matveev, Regina O’Brien & Morgan Partridge) also received their first career All-American awards.
All 12 All-American honorees were also named to the Midwest All-Region team for their achievement at the Midwest Regional back in March. The Irish also had four other athletes earn All-Region honors including Malcolm Fields (second team), Samantha Viqueira (Honorable Mention), Reghan Ward (Honorable Mention) and Dasha Yefremenko (Honorable Mention).
