Duke’s Justin Guterding scored 40 seconds into overtime to enable the 13th-ranked Blue Devils to knock off fourth-rated Notre Dame 10-9 in an Atlantic Coast Conference Championship men’s lacrosse semifinal.

That result came Friday night in front of 3,112 fans on an overcast, 81-degree evening at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on the campus of Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia.

The Irish came in as the number-two seed, while Duke was the third seed.

The overtime goal finished off a second-half comeback in which the Blue Devils scored nine times after halftime after being held to a single goal in the opening 30 minutes.

Sergio Perkovic and Ryder Garnsey both scored three times for the Irish, and Mikey Wynne added two more goals. Matt Kavanagh had a goal and a pair of assists.

Notre Dame twice had four-goal advantages–at 6-2 at 9:38 of the third period on Wynne’s second goal and again at 8-4 on Garnsey’s second tally at 4:01 of the third period. Garnsey managed the final Irish score for a 9-7 lead with more than 13 minutes remaining. But Duke fought back with a goal by Chad Cohan at 11:09 of the fourth period and then Myles Jones’ tying tally at the 7:37 mark.

The Irish did not commit a turnover in the third period (compared to six for Duke) and had only five after three periods. The 8-6 Notre Dame lead after three matched the final score when two two teams met in South Bend April 10.

Defense ruled the first half in the big way. Wynne caught a rebound of a Perkovic shot and put it in for the first points at 1:53 of the first period, but that marked the only scoring of the quarter.

Perkovic added a second Irish tally at 7:43 of the second period, and Garnsey followed suit on a Kavanagh assist at the 1:07 mark of the second quarter.

Notre Dame held Duke to only six shots on goal in the opening half (only one by Jones). Dating back to the two teams’ regular-season meeting in South Bend three weeks ago, the Blue Devils managed only two goals over a 58:23 stretch against the Irish defense.

Both teams caught fire in the third period as they combined for 10 goals after collecting only four in the entire first half.

Duke led 36-34 in shots and won 18 of 23 face-offs. Both teams scored twice on extra-man chances. Duke had 15 turnovers compared to seven for the Irish.

The Irish (9-3, 3-1 ACC) return home to play host to Army in Notre Dame’s regular-season finale May 8 at Arlotta Stadium.
