COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 14/13 Fighting Irish dropped a hard-fought 13-11 decision to No. 18/19 Ohio State at Ohio Stadium on Tuesday in Columbus.

The Irish had three players score two goals, as Bryan Costabile, Wheaton Jackoboice and Brian Willetts each found the back of the net twice. Griffin Westlin led the team with three assists, marking his second straight game with three assists.

How It Happened
After a defensive battle in the first frame, the Buckeyes held a 1-0 lead heading into the second quarter. The Irish offense came to life in the second stanza, outscoring the hosts 5-3 to take a 5-4 lead into the break. Notre Dame scored the last four goals of the period to take momentum into the half.

Ohio State regained the lead at 6-5 after scoring on two quick extra-man opportunities. However, Notre Dame battled back by scoring three of the final five goals of the third to level the score at 8-8 heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

The fourth quarter was a see-saw affair, as the two sides traded goals throughout the frame. The Irish managed to take the lead at 11-10 with 3:30 left in the game off an impressive top-corner rip from Jackoboice. The Buckeyes leveled the game with 1:52 to play and then scored two late goals on extra-man opportunities to win 13-11.

  • Eight players scored for the Irish, marking the fourth time in five games at least seven players scored a goal.
  • With two goals, Costabile has 99 on his career, just one shy of becoming the second midfielder in program history to reach the 100-goal mark.
  • Westlin has now recorded back-to-back three assist performances.
