CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Notre Dame women’s soccer team found itself in its third overtime game in four matches on Friday, this time on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision against Miami on the road at Cobb Stadium.
The Hurricanes scored the decisive goal in the 105th minute as Gracie Lachowecki – sister of Irish men’s soccer player Max Lachowecki – charged the length of the field and poked her shot past a diving Kaela Little to give Miami its first Atlantic Coast Conference win.
Notre Dame (8-3-1, 1-3-0 ACC) outshot Miami (4-7-0, 1-3-0 ACC) 16-6 and held a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net despite spending the majority of the game in the offensive zone. The Irish owned an 8-1 edge in corner kicks, as well.
The Irish kept the ball in their attacking half for the majority of the first period, but could not connect on the net despite outshooting the Hurricanes 4-2, including 2-1 in shots on goal in the opening stanza. Senior forward Anna Maria Gilbertson and sophomore midfielder Taylor Klawunder each put shots on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
The Irish pushed the pace again as the second half wore on, taking the first five shots of a period in which they would outshoot Miami 8-2. Gilbertson was particularly active in the period, first drawing Miami goalkeeper Catalina Perez off the net in the 69th minute, but her turning scoring chance went wide. Ten minutes later, Gilbertson got another good look from about eight yards out, but it slithered just wide.
As the game progressed to overtime, the Irish turned up the pressure, sending four shots in the first extra session and keeping the Hurricane defense on its heels. Gilbertson again put a pair of shots toward goal within a minute of each other late in the period, but the first was deflected and the other sailed high.
Notre Dame looked to do more of the same in the second overtime, and the Irish got three straight corner kicks with a chance to score on the set piece. As the third was served into the box, it appeared as if it hit the hand of a Miami defender, but the play went uncalled and the confusion allowed the Hurricanes to play the through ball to Lachowecki on the decisive play.
Gilbertson led all players with seven shots and three shots on goal. Natalie Jacobs, Sandra Yu and Katie Naughton each notched a pair of shots.
The Irish will have nearly a week of rest before they return to Alumni Stadium to take on Syracuse at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday.
