Notre Dame, Ind. – The 14th-ranked Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team got goals from nine different players and goalkeeper Jen White (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) made nine saves as the Fighting Irish took a 15-4 decision from the Virginia Tech Hokies Saturday afternoon at Meyo Field in the Loftus Sports Center.
Senior Alissa Moser (North Wales, Pa.) led the Irish with four goals and an assist while Natalie Loftus (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) and Meredith Simon (So., Flemington, N.J.) scored three goals each in Notre Dame’s second BIG EAST win of the season.
White, who has played every game in goal for the Irish this season, gave up just four goals in the game – three of them on free position shots – and led both teams with six ground balls.
The win improved the Irish to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in BIG EAST play while Virginia Tech falls to 4-5 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
Moser got Notre Dame on the board just under eight minutes into the game with a free position goal at 22:10. Simon scored the next two goals (17:11 and 16:24) to give the Irish a 3-0 lead. Loftus followed with two in a row to make it 5-0 and Moser closed the Irish first-half scoring with her second free position goal of the half for a 6-0 Notre Dame lead.
Lacey Dieringer broke White’s shutout bid with 2:56 left in the half for a 6-1 halftime score.
The Irish lead would go to 10-1 just under nine minutes into the second half as Kassen Delano (So., Alexandria, Va.), Lauren Fischer (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.), Danielle Shearer (Jr., Hampstead, Md.) and Moser scorer consecutive goals.
Kellyn Hentz stopped the Irish run with a goal at 15:56 of the second half to cut the lead to 10-2. The Irish then scored five more goals to up the lead to 15-2.
Andrea Kinnik (So., West Chester, Pa.) started the run as she answered Hentz’ goal just 24 seconds later at 15:32.
Moser (her fourth), Loftus (her third) and Simon (her third) made it 14-2 by the 7:02 mark. Maureen Whitaker (Sr., Doylestown, Pa.) closed out the scoring for Notre Dame with 3:31 left in the game.
Virginia Tech closed out the scoring on a pair of free position goals by Lisa Tsimbidis at 1:56 and 1:02 for the final score of 15-4.
Notre Dame outshot the Hokies 26-17 in the game. Virginia Tech’s Jamie McGraw made seven saves in the game.
The Irish return to action on Wednesday, April 3 when they close out their five-game homestand with a visit from the eighth-ranked Syracuse Orangewomen. Game time at Moose Krause Stadium (weather permitting) is set for 4:00 p.m.
