NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The 14th-ranked Notre Dame women’s tennis team did not drop a set in beating 51st-ranked Indiana 8-0 on Tuesday for its fifth consecutive win over the Hoosiers. Senior Kelly Zalinski beat Amanda Field 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to win her 116th career singles match, tying former Irish All-American Jennifer Hall for the school record. The Irish return to action when they play host to 45th-ranked Miami (Fla.) on Sat., April 15 in the final match of the regular season for Notre Dame. The Irish improved to 18-5 with the win and a victory Saturday would give them their best record ever under 11th-year head coach Jay Louderback.
Sophomores Nina Vaughan and Lindsey Green gave the Irish a 2-0 lead with quick wins. Vaughan beat Ann Poosuthasee 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, while Green won her team-leading 19th dual-singles match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jennifer Hsia at No. 5 singles. After Zalinski’s win, freshman Katie Cunha closed out Nicki Barnet 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Junior All-American Michelle clinched the Irish win with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Jessica Anderson at No. 1 singles.
Sophomore Becky Varnum completed the sweep of singles with her win over Kelly Blanch at No. 2 singles. Varnum rallied from 3-6 down to win the first set tiebreaker 8-6 and won 6-2 in the second set.
With No. 2 and 3 doubles having already begun and the outcome of the match determined, Noo. 1 doubles was not played. Cunha and senior Sara Scaringe won the final three games to defeat Barnet and Poosuthasee 8-5 at No. 3 doubles. Green and Zalinski held on for a 9-8 (7-4) win over Field and Hsia at No. 2 doubles.
