BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The No. 16-ranked Fighting Irish and No. 4 Indiana battled to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening at Armstrong Stadium. The result moves Notre Dame to 3-1-1 on the season and 1-0-1 away from home.
The Irish goal came from sophomore Ben Giacobello, the first of his career. Senior goalkeeper Duncan Turnbull also had a notable performance, finishing with six saves.z
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish started the match on the front foot, earning two corners in the first five minutes of play. The Hoosiers then settled in and had a chance to grab an early lead in the 19th minute, as Jack Maher put an effort on frame but Notre Dame’s Felicien Dumas was perfectly positioned to clear it off the line.
Notre Dame made two subs in the 37th minute by bringing on John Rea and Giacobello and they made and instant impact. Less than three minutes after coming on Rea found Mohamed Omar in space down the left flank. Omar got to the endline, drawing the keeper off his line and played a perfect pass to Giacobello who made a near-post run and poked the ball into the net to put Notre Dame on top 1-0 at the half.
Senior goalkeeper Duncan Turnbull kept the Irish in front early in the second half with a magnificent save. After a Notre Dame backpass was intercepted, Turnbull made a diving save, pushing the IU shot off the post in the 50th minute.
In the 66th minute the Hoosiers managed to level the match at 1-1. An Indiana player sent a cross in from the right flank and connected with Herbert Endeley who headed in the host’s first goal of the evening.
Turnbull produced another big save in the 89th minute to keep the match tied at 1-1 and send it to overtime.
Notre Dame had the best chance in the first overtime session, as Spencer Farina played Aschieris into space down the right but the forward’s show was wide of the near post, sending the match into a second overtime session.
The Irish nearly pulled out the victory in the final 10 minutes. Notre Dame earned a corner and Senan Farrelly won the aerial battle but his header sailed just wide of the far post as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

“Overall I’m proud of the effort and the competitiveness of the group. We are disappointed to not win the game but at the end of the day it was a step forward in a lot of ways. In other areas we weren’t as sharp as we wanted to be but overall I believe it was a step forward.”

“He did a great job. He played to his potential, and we know he has a high potential. When you are playing good teams away from home your keeper is going to have to be part of your defense that stops their chances and I was proud of his performance for sure.”

- Notre Dame moves to 5-5-2 in its last 12 matches against the Hoosiers.
- Giacobello’s goal was the first of his career and he becomes the Irish player to score a goal this season.
- Omar’s assist is his first of the season and second of his career.
