BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 17 Notre Dame men’s tennis squad suffered back-to-back losses on its state of Virginia road swing. It was a top-ranked showdown on Friday evening when they dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 4 Virginia. Then on Sunday, the Fighting Irish incurred a 4-1 loss at Virginia Tech.
The Blue & Gold drop to 19-6 overall and 8-4 in ACC play with one regular-season matchup remaining – Senior Day vs. Louisville at home on April 11 at Noon ET. The Irish are currently in a three-way tie for third in the ACC standings with NC State and Stanford.
It was a close one in doubles at No. 4 Virginia. No. 47 Luis Llorens Saracho & Peter Nad (ND) were edged out, 7-5, against Rice/Brockett. If that one could have been flipped, Sebastian Dominko and Perry Gregg were up 6-5 against No. 5 Dahlberg/Dietrich.
In singles, the Cavaliers clinched on courts two, six, and one. The lone Irish point came via Peter Nad on court four. Nad upset No. 102 Jangjun Kim, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. In fact, it was quite the weekend individually for Nad, who was also ND’s lone point at Virginia Tech, where he defeated Drew Fishback, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
Nad has now won four straight and is 12-4 in dual singles matches.
As alluded to, Notre Dame at Virginia Tech followed a similar script, in which the Irish lost the doubles point before suffering a 4-1 defeat, with Nad victorious. The order of finish there was three, four, five and then one.
No. 72 Perry Greg was closing in on victory on Sunday against Patrik Jurina, 7-6(3), 5-4. Luis Llorens Saracho also went unfinished vs. Blake Hilsen, 3-6, 6-3, 3-4, unfinished.
