NCAA HISTORY

  • The Irish will be making their 16th appearance in the NCAAs, third consecutive, fourth in the seven-year Paul Mainieri era (since ’95) and 7th in the last 10 years … this is the second time Notre Dame has played host to an NCAA regional in the last three years.
  • Notre Dame has made one appearance in the College World Series, doing so in 1957.
  • Notre Dame’s other NCAA seasons came in 1949, ’56-’60, ’63, ’70, ’89, ’92-’94, ’96, ’99 and 2000. The Irish have an all-time record of 27-31 in NCAA play (5-6 in the Mainieri era).
  • The Irish reached the title game in the 2000 NCAA Starkville Regional, losing 10-9 to host Mississippi State in the second championship game … ND also reached the title game in the ’92 Atlantic Regional, losing 5-1 to host Miami in the second title game.
  • Notre Dame was one of six schools that hosted an NCAA regional for the first time in 1999 (since the tournament shifted from a district to regional format in 1975) … ND is one of 11 schools to host two-plus regionals in the past three seasons … ND previously played host to NCAA tournament games following the 1949 and 1959 seasons (prior to regional format).

TEAM NOTES

  • Notre Dame’s 45 regular-season wins is best all-time in the program’s 109-year history … the 46 overall wins equal the second-most in school history (matching the ’90, ’93, ’94, ’00 seasons), trailing only the 48 win seasons of 1989 and 1992
  • The Irish went 10-1 this season vs. teams in the NCAA field, including 4-0 vs. Rutgers, 3-0 vs. Seton Hall, 2-0 at Columbus Regional top seed Mississippi State and a win at Fresno State (with a loss to South Florida in St. Petersburg).
  • Notre Dame has posted 40-plus victories in each of the past 13 seasons, the nation’s 4th-longest active streak behind Florida State (24), Wichita State (24) and Clemson (close to 15, currently 38-20 entering the NCAAs).
  • ND’s team stats for 2001 include a .318 batting avg. (up 20 points from 2000), 35 home runs, 90 stolen bases, a 3.06 ERA and a .963 fielding percentage… ND currently ranks 3rd in the nation for team ERA, after spending three weeks in April atop the ERA charts.
  • The Irish were 9-6-1 in regular-season games decided by one run or in extra innings.
  • Notre Dame ranked as the 7th-winningest team in NCAA Division I baseball for the decade of the 1990s, with a .724 winning percentage (440-168) … from 1990-2001, the Irish have compiled a 532-197-1 record (.730).
  • The Irish played 20 of their first 21 games in 2001 away from home, posting a solid 15-4-1 record in those games … ND’s 10 roadtrips in 2001 have covered roughly 20,600 roundtrip miles through 12 states.
  • Notre Dame has played 272 different opponents in the long history of the program … a potential matchup with UC-Santa Barbara would be the first-ever game between ND and UCSB … the Irish are 8-3 all-time vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 0-3 vs. Florida International.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES

  • Senior RHP and soon-to-be four-year All-American Aaron Heilman is a top candidate for national player of the year, with a 14-0 season record, 1.54 ERA, 11 complete games, 3 shutouts, 103 Ks, 27 BB and a .170 opp. avg. in 105 IP … he’s the 5th Division I pitcher-3rd since ’94-to reach 40 wins and 400 Ks in his career (42-7, 417), with wins in 24 of his last 25 decisions … he holds ND career records for wins and Ks and ranks 2nd in career ERA (2.46) … he’s rated the nation’s No. 13 draft prospect by TeamOne Baseball (4th among college pitchers).
  • Senior RHP Danny Tamayo (8-2, 2.53, 101 Ks/14 BB, 103.1 IP, .217, 3 ShO) has combined with Heilman to form a potent 1-2 punch … Tamayo has made an inspiring return from “Tommy John” elbow surgery in 1999 and has posted 10 Ks five times in 2001.
  • Junior CF Steve Stanley has started all 183 games of his ND career (all in CF) while missing just 14 of 1,560 career innings … his 83 career stolen bases rank 3rd in ND history while his .355 career batting avg. is 10th.
  • Senior SS Alec Porzel is the first ND player ever to reach 30 home runs (now 36) and 30 stolen bases (now 32) in his career … he ranks near the top of nearly every ND career category, including 1st in doubles (76) and ABs (872), 2nd in starts (229) and RBI (210) and 5th in hits (269) and HRs (36).
