NCAA HISTORY

  • The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will be making its second trip to the NCAA tournament having previously qualified for the event in 1999.
  • The Panthers went 1-2 at the 1999 Lubbock Regional. They earned their first-ever tournament victory over top-seeded Rice in the opening game of that regional.

TEAM NOTES

  • This season marked the second time in school history that UWM has claimed the MCC conference tournament. It was also its first outright regular-season title after sharing the honor with Illinois-Chicago last year.
  • The Panthers are 0-5 against teams that have qualified for this season’s NCAA tournament. They opened their season dropping three games at Texas and lost a pair of games at Nebraska.
  • UWM has a 3-8 record against former MCC-rival Notre Dame. The Panthers claimed a 14-3 win at Eck Stadium in 2000 in the schools previous meeting. UWM has never played UC Santa Barbara or Florida International.
  • The Panthers have already set a number of school records during the 2001 season, including marks for wins overall (39) and MCC wins (16), besting marks originally set in 1998. UWM has also set school records for runs (521), RBI (461), hits (692) and stolen bases (93). The Panther offense is also on pace to shatter the school record for batting average in a season (.329 in 1998), with UWM’s team average at .354 entering the NCAA Tournament.
  • The game-one win over Butler on May 12 was the 200th career victory for Jerry Augustine as the head coach at UWM. He is the winningest coach in school history.
  • UWM is currently ranked second in the nation in batting average (.354) and is fifth in runs scored per game (9.47)

INDIVIDUAL NOTES

  • Senior CF Darin Haugom was named the MCC Player of the Year following the regular season. He leads the Panthers in hitting at .430, and also posts a .498 on base percentage and a .651 slugging percentage. Haugom is UWM’s career leader in hits, runs, doubles, triples and stolen bases, and this year drove in 47 runs, scored 60 runs and stole 20 bases.
  • Senior 2B Scott Gillitzer earned MVP honors at the MCC tournament with a .444 average in four games, with eight hits in 18 at bats. He also drove in five runs and scored five runs.
  • Gillitzer set a single-season record for hits with a home run May 11 against Butler, breaking Steve Tylke’s mark of 79 in 1999. Gillitzer enters the NCAA tournament with 91 hits.
  • Freshman righthander Aaron Bushong went 2-0 in the conference tournament winning both of his starts (Thursday and Sunday). He allowed one run in 16 innings on 11 hits, walking one and striking out 10.
  • Junior righthander Quintin Oldenburg’s nine wins this season are the best single-season effort in Panther history. His 17 career wins rank third all-time at the school.
  • Junior righthander Matt Freisleben has been remarkable out of the Panther bullpen this season, yielding just four earned runs in 34 2/3 innings this season, while appearing in 28 games–breaking his own school record. Freisleben’s 1.04 ERA would shatter the school record (1.45 set by Joe Starck in 1966). He has issued just two walks and one home run this season.
