RALEIGH, N.C. — In a match that saw four singles matches reach third sets and featured two sets that reached tiebreakers, the No. 25 University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team fell in a tight 4-3 decision to No. 29 NC State on Friday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
How It Happened
NC State (12-5, 2-4 ACC) won the doubles point, first winning 6-2 on Court 2 before clinching the opening advantage with a 6-1 win on Court 1.
Freshman Tristan McCormick evened the score with the first singles decision, defeating Michael Ogden 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot and junior Grayson Broadus put Notre Dame up 2-1, winning 6-2, 7-6 over Robert Turzak at No. 6.
The Wolfpack evened it back up on Court 1 as Igor Saveljic defeated 48th-ranked Alex Lebedev 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Tadas Babelis put NC State back in the lead, defeating sophomore Guillermo Cabrera 6-4, 3-6 6-4 at Court 2.
Freshman Richard Ciamarra next defeated Georgiy Malyshev in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 at the No. 3 position to knot the team score at 3-3.
But Ivan Saveljic of NC State shut the door for the Wolfpack, defeating sophomore Matt Gamble 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to seal a 4-3 win for NC State.
Up Next
The Irish (12-10, 3-3 ACC) will take on No. 1 Wake Forest (15-1, 4-1 ACC) at noon ET Sunday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
