NOTRE DAME, Indiana — The University of Notre Dame fencing teams put on a show for the home fans at the Castellan Family Fencing Center on Saturday in the opening day of the annual DeCicco Duals. Both squads finished a perfect 7-0 at the end of the day, including a number of matches the Irish never dropped a single bout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both the men’s and women’s squad wasted no time in their first matches of the day, soundly defeating Denison. The women tallied a 26-1 win while the men won by a score of 25-2.
Large victories would be a theme of the day for both teams as they only allowed one opponent each to score four or more points.
The top-ranked Notre Dame women swept the next three matches against Detroit Mercy (27-0), Lawrence (27-0) and Wayne State (27-0) all while the sabre and foil teams failed to drop a bout through the first four matches.
The second-ranked men’s team would also sweep Detroit Mercy (27-0), while defeating Lawrence 25-2 and Wayne State 18-9. The men’s epee team only dropped one bout over the first four matches of the day.
The women’s team had a stiff competition in Round 5 when they went up against the only other ranked opponent in the field, No. 9 Northwestern. Thanks to another strong showing by the sabre squad (7-2), the women etched out a 14-13 win over the ninth-ranked Wildcats.
The men’s team earned two sweeps over the final three matches (Northwestern and Florida) while winning by a score of 25-2 over Cleveland State to close out the first day of action. The women’s team picked up their final two victories of the day by a score of 24-3 (Cleveland State) and 25-2 (Florida) to finish the day with an unblemished record with the men.
The aforementioned women’s sabre and men’s epee teams led the way for both squads, amassing a 61-2 record through seven rounds of competition. Senior sabreur Regina O’Brien led the pack for the women, finishing with a perfect 18-0 record on the day while junior Reghan Ward and sophomore Kara Linder were not far behind with 17-1 records.
On the men’s side, junior foilist Thomas Murray tallied the most wins with a 14-2 record and junior Alexander Ju was not far behind after going 13-2. The men had a total of 12 athletes finish the day with an undefeated record after appearing in at least five bouts.
UP NEXT
The Irish will finish the weekend with the second day of the DeCicco Duals Sunday morning. Competition continues at 8 a.m. but the first match for the Irish will not start until 9 a.m. as they have a bye in Round 8. The last match of the day for the Irish will be at 3 p.m. in Round 15 with all matches concluding after 4 p.m and Round 16.
