3-Peat: Irish Women Win Third Straight ACC Team Title

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Fighting Irish women’s fencing team captured its third straight ACC team title on Sunday afternoon inside the Joyce Center, winning the first ever two-team fence-off to claim the championship.

Notre Dame sophomore foilist Josephina Conway was voted Women’s Most Valuable Fencer after winning the individual foil championship and winning the foil bout to clinch the fence-off versus Duke.

The Notre Dame women went 2-1 on the day, recording wins over Boston College (18-9) and UNC (19-8) before falling to Duke (17-10) to set up the fence-off. The Irish dropped the sabre portion by a score of 5-4 but rebounded with a 5-1 win by Amanda Pirkowski in epee to set up the deciding bout in foil. Fresh off winning the individual title on Saturday evening, Conway delivered the Irish the team title with a 5-3 win to complete the three-peat.

The women’s foil team had a standout performance on the day, going 19-8 over the three duals to help the Irish capture the title.

The Notre Dame men’s fencing team placed second in the ACC team championships, posting wins over Duke (17-10) and Boston College (20-7) but the team suffered a defeat to UNC (17-10) which kept them from winning the title.

The Irish will compete in the NCAA Midwest Regionals in Detroit on Saturday, March 9 as they prepare for the NCAA Championships later in the month.
