COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nearly two dozen Irish swimmers headed to Ohio State this weekend to close out the 2022-23 season at the Ohio State Winter Invitational. Athletes from Ball State, Duquesne, John Carroll, Kentucky, Ohio University and Pitt were also participating. Scores were not kept.

In total, Notre Dame amassed 20 top-three finishes. Two freshmen men — Micheal Flynn and Sammy Sierra — earned individual titles. Flynn won the 100 breaststroke (54.36), while Sierra took first in the 200 butterfly (1:46.54).

Sophomore Reese Lugbill had three top-three finishes on the weekend, the most of anyone between the two teams. The Mason, Ohio native took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.75) and third in both the 200 breaststroke (2:18.46) and 400 IM (4:27.08).

Butterflier Madison Menkhaus took silver in both of those stroke’s events: 54.40 in the 100 and 1:59.47 in the 200.

This weekend’s competition was the final meet for several Irish seniors: Sarah Boyle, Nick Chase, Liam Hutchinson, Charles Korndorffer, Meaghan Lyons, Maddy Potter and Sydney Winters. Boyle, Chase, Lyons and Winters served as captains this season.

Both Hutchinson and Korndorffer had notable last outings. Hutchinson was second in the 200 freestyle (1:37.07) and third in the 500 freestyle (4:23.02). Korndorffer took silver in the 100 butterfly (47.76) and bronze in the 100 backstroke (48.12).

Those that did not go to Ohio State this weekend will compete in the 2023 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships in Greensboro beginning Tuesday.
