No. 50 Notre Dame Handles No. 53 Wisconsin 7-0

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The #50 ranked Notre Dame men’s team kicked off the weekend with a sweep of #53 ranked Wisconsin 7-0. In the Eck Tennis Pavilion, the Irish would win the doubles point, quickly win three singles matches to clinch the win and top it off with the final three matches as 3-set wins including two from a set down.

The first doubles match went the way of the Badgers as #3 doubles lost 6-1. The top two spots in the lineup began with polar opposite starts as the top team of Chase Thompson and Peter Nad broke to open their match while Sebastian Dominko would drop his serve with partner Kyran Magimay to start. The top court would continue their good form throughout and win the match 6-4, leading all eyes to turn #2 doubles. After getting down 0-2 and the two teams trading holds of serve, Dominko and Magimay would break at 4-5 and then hold to nose ahead 6-5. Then with Wisconsin serving to stay in the match, the pressure from the Irish team would force a match point double fault and the home team led 1-0 headed into singles.

In the singles portion of play, Notre Dame jumped out to early leads on a number of courts to continue their momentum built from doubles. Chase Thompson took to court #2 and was first off with a 6-2, 6-3 win followed shortly by Dominko winning at #1 6-1, 6-3 to put the Irish within one of the victory. Nad had a bit tighter of a match but still won in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 to secure the 4th point and Notre Dame’s 9th dual match win of the season.

The remaining matches were played to completion and all of them would go to three sets. Magimay, playing #6, came out blistering and built a quick 5-1 lead before wrapping up the set 6-2. After losing the second by a single break of serve 3-6, he rebounded to claim the third set 6-3.

On the other side of the building, seniors Jamie Corsillo and Yu Zhang both lost the opening set of their matches but fought back to take the second. Since the team match was decided at the time they lost the middle set, the third set in each was a 10-point match tiebreak. Corsillo was first off the court claiming his #5 court 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(5). Zhang, who was the final match on last week at Illinois, was last off again this week but on the right side of the scoreline with a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0(8) to complete the 7-0 sweep of the Badgers.

Up Next:

The men will hit the road for the final match before conference play begins as they take on Northwestern on Sunday the 23rd. The Irish will take on the Wildcats in Evanston at the Combes Tennis Center at 1pm ET.
