#6 Irish Edged By #15/18 Duke in ACC Quarterfinals

Andie Aldave & Maddie Howe each net four goals

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. —  Andie Aldave and Maddie Howe each scored four goals, but the sixth-ranked Fighting Irish were edged by #15/18 Duke, 14-13, in the quarterfinals of the 2019 ACC Championship tonight at Alumni Stadium.

Jessi Masinko scored twice for the Irish, while Mollie Carr, Samantha Lynch and Kathleen Roe also netted goals.

Aldave led the Irish with seven draw controls and Savannah Buchanan added six while also causing a pair of turnovers.

Samantha Giacolone stopped eight shots in goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blue Devils earned a 2-0 lead before Aldave got the Irish on the board at the 18:29 mark of the opening half.

The two sides traded goals for the next 9:49 of play, with Howe, Masinko and Carr netting markers to keep the Irish within one.

After Carr’s goal with 8:40 left in the first half, Masinko and Aldave scored back-to-back tallies to give the Irish a 6-5 lead with 5:22 to go in the opening frame.

Duke responded with a pair of goals to close out the half to earn a 7-6 advantage after 30 minutes.

The Blue Devils doubled their lead 49 seconds into the second stanza before scored 37 seconds apart to even the score, 8-8, with 27:48 to play.

Aldave’s fourth goal knotted the score once again at 9-9, and Samantha Lynch gave the Irish a 10-9 lead with 19 minutes remaining.

Duke responded again with three consecutive goals to earn a 12-10 advantage at the 12:36 mark of the second half.

Howe completed her hat trick to bring the Irish within one, and Roe went coast-to-coast for the game-tying goal with 7:57 to go.

The Blue Devils struck twice in two minutes to regain a two-goal lead with 4:10 to play.

Howe brought the Irish back within one with her 50th goal of the season with 3:37 remaining, but Notre Dame was unable to net the equalizer in the closing minutes.
