COLLEGE PARK, Md. – For the first time in the last five matchups, No. 8/8 Notre Dame (2-1) came out on the wrong side of the decision against No. 2/2 Maryland (5-0), falling to the Terrapins by a final score of 12-10. Junior attackman
Ryder Garnsey led the Irish in scoring with four goals and added an assist to record a season-high five points. Senior attackman Mikey Wynne added four points off two goals and two assists, while senior midfielder chipped in a career-high three with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Brian Willetts also found the back of the net twice at Maryland.
How It Happened
The hosts built a two-goal lead after the opening 15 minutes of play, outscoring the Irish 4-2 in the first quarter. The Terrapins scored the opening two goals of the day before Notre Dame responded with strikes from Wynne and Willetts to level the score at 2-2. Maryland answered by scoring two more times before the end of the frame.
The Irish were outscored by Maryland 4-3 in the second stanza to take an 8-5 lead into the halftime. The three Notre Dame goals came from Garnsey (2) and Byrne. Maryland’s fourth goal of the quarter came right at the haltime horn to push its lead to three.
The two defenses tightened up in the third quarter, as both teams scored two goals to move the score to 10-7 entering the final 15 minutes of action.
The Irish scored the opening goal of the fourth frame to draw within two of Maryland at 10-8, as Wynne found Garnsey with a perfect outlet pass to allow the junior to fire past the Terrapin keeper on a breakaway. Unfortunately, Notre Dame never could cut the deficit to one, as Maryland answered each Irish score en route to the 12-10 win.
