Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame senior defenseman A.J. Wright (Timonium, Md.) has been named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA)/STX Honorable Mention All-America Team, marking the 10th straight year that an Irish men’s lacrosse player has earned All-America recognition.
Wright becomes the 12th different player and fourth defenseman to earn USILA/STX All-America recognition in the 22-year history of the program. Past defensemen to earn All-America recognition have included three-time honorees Mike Iorio (1993-95) and Todd Rassas and Mike Adams, an honorable mention selection in 2001.
Wright was the only player on the 2002 13-member Great Western Lacrosse League all-conference team to repeat as a first-team honoree. The Irish captain was one of five players to start all 13 games during this season and was third on the Notre Dame squad with 31 grounds balls.
A three-year starter, Wright started the final 43 games of his collegiate career and played in 45 contests. He finished with 82 career ground balls.
Notre Dame registered a 5-8 record during the ’02 campaign and 3-1 mark in GWLL play as it shared the conference regular-season crown with Fairfield. It marked the fourth consecutive year the Irish have either won outright or shared the league title.
