Sept. 24, 2006

Welcome Pennsylvania Guests! Notre Dame has a large presence in Pennsylvania (which Penn State fans likely notice back home), with 13 Notre Dame alumni clubs in the state: Central Pennsylvania, Erie, Gettysburg, Greensburg/Uniontown, Harrisburg, Hanover Township, Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Pocono Mountains, Reading, Schuylkill County and Scranton.

Besides providing some of the greatest support in the country for Fighting Irish football, the Pennsylvania ND alumni clubs organize activities and events in service to their communities and Notre Dame. Some also have the opportunity to host Irish teams competing in Big East athletics. Visit http://alumni.nd.edu/clubs/clublist.html for contact information for these and 274 alumni clubs in the U.S. and internationally.

Hannah Storm Journalism Internship
Talented ND journalism students will be the recipients of the annual Hannah Storm Journalism Internship and work with the Notre Dame Alumni Association publications, newsletters, web site and web site development. Applications for the first internship are due November 1, 2006. For more information, visit http://alumni.nd.edu/hannahstorm.html. http://alumni.nd.edu/hannahstorm.html

Hannah Storm Book Signing
Hannah Storm, co-host of NBC’s “The Early Show” and a 1983 graduate of Notre Dame, will sign copies of her newly released book, Notre Dame Inspirations, on Saturday, September 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore. Hannah has compiled the reminiscences of alumni who have distinguished themselves in a variety of fields, with contributors focusing on a pivotal Notre Dame event that helped to crystalize their dreams.

Hannah Storm began working for NBC sports in 1992 and during her time at NBC covered four Olympic Games, as well as NBA and WNBA basketball, NFL football, figure skating, and MLB baseball. She became the first woman in American television history to host a major network’s sports package when she hosted baseball games for CBS from 1994 to 2000, and NBA games from 1997 to 2002. She also covered NBA games on cable for Turner Network Television. In October of 2002, Hannah moved to “The Early Show.”

Football Weekends on Campus
Watch for these ’06 Irish football special events:

“Jammin’ at the Eck” — New this season on Football Fridays: a hospitality tent outside the north side of the Eck Visitors Center for the Penn State and Michigan weekends. Make your connections there and enjoy the music. Invited performers include The Undertones, the Varsity Cheerleaders, members of the Marching Band, the bag pipe band, Irish dancers, members of the Juggling Club . . . and more. Concessions are available and Notre Dame tickets and merchandise raffled.

Game Day Hospitality — On Saturdays, include a visit to the Joyce Center (Gate 3) in your pre-game fun for music, information and camaraderie. Classmates can plan to meet at the class tables, sign in, and leave a note for friends or their class secretary, register for Irish Online, look up graduates in the alumni directory, and obtain information on Alumni Association programs.

Be at the center of the stadium action in the cyclorama, and let the kids enjoy six “inflatables” in which they can jump, slide, and throw or kick a football. Fans can also photograph each other with cut-outs of former Notre Dame coaches and players, and participate in an autograph session. The Notre Dame cheerleaders will perform three hours prior to kickoff, and the Undertones (from the Glee Club) and the pom pom squad, two hours before game time. Guests without game tickets can watch on a big screen in the Joyce Center.

Notre Dame’s most engaging faculty speakers are discussing some of the most pressing issues of our times on home football Saturday mornings, on campus. Visitors are welcome to attend the Saturday Scholars lecture series, sponsored by the College of Arts and Letters. Lectures begin three and one-half hours before the start of the game. The September 9 lecture is titled, “More Than a Movie? Assessing The Da Vinci Code” and takes place in 101 DeBartolo Hall. The other 2006 Saturday Scholars lectures will take place in the Annenberg Auditorium of the Snite Museum of Art, unless otherwise noted.

Descriptions of all the lectures are posted at http://saturdayscholar.nd.edu/.
