NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) recently announced several of its year-end awards, with the University of Notre Dame rowing team receiving heavy praise following another successful season both on the water and in the classroom.
Here’s a breakdown of the final awards:
All-Region
After claiming all-Atlantic Coast Conference honors at the league’s championship regatta in mid-May, senior Joanna Mulvey and junior Hilary Shinnick received similar CRCA all-region accolades recently.
Mulvey claimed first team honors through the ACC and CRCA, while Shinnick tallied second team accolades from both organizations.
Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team’s regional finish, coach recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams’ varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
Final Ranking
The Irish found themselves ranked No. 18 in the final USRowing/CRCA Collegiate Rowing poll of the season.
Notre Dame stayed in the poll for the entire year, starting at No. 17 in the preseason poll March 9 and hit a high of No. 15 on May 4 and May 11 before finishing No. 18.
Scholar Athletes
Nine Irish student-athletes tallied CRCA National Scholar-Athlete accolades. These honorees include Sarah Kappers, Reilly Kearney, Katherine Lumetta, Alexis Olson, Treasa O’Tighearnaigh, Kathleen Skorcz, Meredith Swartz, Alex Techar and Catherine Wagner.
To be eligible the student-athlete must meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, be a sophomore, junior or senior, rowed in her institution’s NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event and posted a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career (through the fall semester/quarter for the current competition year).
