Irish Drop Pitcher’s Duel to No. 19 Florida State in Extras

NOTRE DAME, Ind. –  The University of Notre Dame baseball team went to extras in the ACC series finale for the third straight week after Sunday’s contest against Florida State was all squared after nine innings. The Seminoles (17-6, 5-4) scored twice in the 10th to jump back in front and claim the 3-1 win over the Irish (9-12, 5-4).

How It Happened

Similar to the first game of the series, it was a pitcher’s duel through the opening innings. Coming off the best start of his career at Clemson, Cameron Junker was locked in once again Sunday against the Seminoles. He struck out two in the opening frame and had seven strikeouts over the first four innings.

It was scoreless for both teams until the top of the sixth when Florida State got on the board. Cabell hit a rocket to the wall in left center and made it all the way to third with a triple and just one out. He came around to score during the next at bat and gave the Seminoles the lead.

The Irish responded in the next half inning after Eric Gilgenbach hit a double of the wall in left that moved Carter Putz over to third. Next up was Niko Kavadas and he hit a towering fly ball to right that was deep enough to score Putz and tie the game.

Heading into the later innings, the Seminoles were threatening to pull ahead in the eighth with runners at first and second. After a Tommy Vail pitch, David LaManna fired the ball down to first and caught Cabell off the bag to end the inning.

In the ninth, Florida State had a runner at third with one away as Joe Boyle entered the game. He got a shallow pop-up to center that wasn’t deep enough for the run to score. Next up, Boyle induced a ground-out to second to end the inning.

In the top half of the 10th, the Seminoles broke through with two runs after two errors extended the inning. The Irish were unable to make anything happen in the bottom of the 10th and dropped the final game to the Seminoles.

Game Notes

  • Cameron Junker tied a career high with eight strikeouts in six innings against the Seminoles.
