SOUTH BEND, Ind.(AP) —Behind a strong pitching performance from sophomore Peter Ogilvie, Notre Dame (49-12-1) topped Florida International (42-19) 5-2 in Game 6 of the South Bend regional to force a decisive Game 7.
Ogilvie (5-1) went the distance, scattering nine hits, striking out five while walking two. Of Olgivie’s 130 pitches, 90 were strikes.
The Irish took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman Steve Sollmann knocked a triple into deep center, plating Ben Cooke and Steve Stanley. Sollmann then scored himself when Golden Panthers shortstop Mickey Torello threw the relay to third base into the Notre Dame dugout.
Losing pitcher Michael Baluja (10-4) pitched all eight innings for Florida International, allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking out four and walking three.
Irish catcher Paul O’Toole stroked a deep shot over the right field fence in the eighth to give Notre Dame its fifth run.
