NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The top-ranked Notre Dame women’s soccer team struck for two goals in an early 54-second span and added to its advantage while rolling up a 34-2 shot edge, as the Irish defeated visiting Seton Hall, 6-0, in BIG EAST Conference Mid-Atlantic Division action Friday night at Alumni Field.
Six different players scored for Notre Dame (10-0-0), which rested many of its regulars for significant portions of the game. Four Irish players registered both a goal and an assist, including freshman forward Amy Warner, senior forward Meotis Erikson, freshman midfielder Randi Scheller and junior forward Kelly Tulisiak. Senior midfielder Caroline Marino capped the scoring with the first goal of her two-year Irish career while the Irish defense posted its sixth shutout of 2000.
Senior All-America midfielder Anne Makinen opened the scoring for the fourth time this season, on a play set up by junior defender Lindsey Jones’ cross from the right flank. The ball deflected to the top of the box for Makinen, who struck a dipping shot into the lower left corner of the net for her team-leading eighth goal of the season and the 59th of her career (9:24).
Less than a minute later, an outlet pass from Erikson sprung the speedy Warner on a breakaway down the right side. A Pirate defender briefly dislodged the ball in the goalbox area but Warner retook the ball and slid her seventh goal of the season under diving freshman goalkeeper Heather Hinton (10:17), whose busy night included 11 saves.
Notre Dame-which had scored only four goals over the course of its previous three games-allowed just one shot in the final 86 minutes of action, yielding the 34-2 shot margin to go along with an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
Erikson and Scheller took turns setting up each other’s goals for a 4-0 halftime cushion. Scheller worked a pass into the box in the 36th minute and Erikson quickly converted for her fifth goal of the season and the 51st of her career (35:53). Five minutes later, Erikson made a run in to the left side of the box and held the ball before sliding a pass to her left. Scheller ran onto the ball in perfect position and sent a crossing shot into the right side of the net for her second goal of the season (41:26).
Tulisiak’s goalscoring magic continued midway through the second half, as she now owns six career goals on just 25 shots (including four on 12 shots this season). Freshman defender Megan Rogers picked up her first point of the season with a pass from the right side before sophomore forward Ali Lovelace redirected the ball from the right endline. Tulisiak was in position from close range and drilled a shot into the far left corner for the 5-0 cushion (63:36).
Marino’s goal had a similar progression, with Tulisiak moving the ball to Warner, who used some sharp cuts and her speed to burst into the right side of the box. Warner then dropped the ball back to the top of the box and Marino lifted a shot into the upper left corner of the net (68:57), for her first career point (in her sixth career game played).
NOTES: ND’s six goals equal a season-high (also vs. Detroit and Santa Clara) while the four goals in the first half equal the most in a half by the Irish this season (also vs. SCU) … Makinen’s 59 career goals tie her with 1996 graduate Michelle McCarthy for fifth in ND history, two behind ’97 grad. Cindy Daws … the Irish now have allowed just one goal (a PK by West Virginia) in the last 498 minutes of action … sophomore G Sani Post played the entire second half and has logged 119 minutes this season without facing a shot on goal … ND continues to pad its season margins for scoring (36-4), shots (280-51), shots on goal (164-26) and corner kicks (79-22).
