SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame graduate netminder Ryan Bischel has been named the Big Ten Conference Third Star of the Week following his contribution to the team’s split last weekend with then No. 13/12 Michigan. In two games with the Irish, the Medina, Minnesota, native stopped 60 shots faced en route to a .953 save percentage.
In game one of the series against the Wolverines, Bischel recorded 27 saves as the Irish defeated the visitors 6-1. His one goal against came on a 5-on-3 penalty kill for the Irish halfway through the first period.
Night two saw the graduate student register 33 saves between the pipes for a .942 save percentage as the Irish fell to Michigan, 2-1.
Against an offense that ranked second nationally with a 4.30 goals per game average, Bischel held the Wolverines to 1.50 goals per game and was the backbone of the Notre Dame penalty kill unit through two games. Bischel was the backbone of the Notre Dame penalty kill which held Michigan’s second-rated powerplay team to just one goal on the man-advantage, which came on the two-man disadvantage for the Irish.
The weekly honor is Bischel’s second of the season and Notre Dame’s fourth of the year.
