SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Fan voting has begun for the annual Hobey Baker Memorial Award and two Irish stars are featured on the ballot. The team’s starter in goal, Ryan Bischel, and the leader in scoring, Landon Slaggert, are each nominees for the elusive award, presented each year to the top player in NCAA Division I men’s hockey.
A graduate senior out of Medina, Minnesota, Bischel is up for the award for the second consecutive year having finished just outside the top-10 a season ago. This year, Bischel continues to be a force in the crease, ranking among the top net minders with a .928 save percentage and 2.41 goals against average. In 26 starts this season, Bischel owns a 13-11-2 record against the toughest schedule in college hockey and boasts three shutouts to put him among the best in program history as he brings his career blankings total to 10.
Continuously ranked among the top scorers in the country throughout 2023-24, Slaggert’s 16 goals and 25 points earns him a bid for the exclusive award. In his senior season, the South Bend local has eclipsed his career-best goal count and owns a plus-nine on-ice rating through 26 games played. His 16 goals and nine assists have him averaging a career-best .962 points per game while he has tabbed seven multi-point games this season, including a collegiate high four points in his most recent outing against Penn State (Jan. 20).
Fan voting accounts for one percent of the final ballot and is open now through March 10 for phase one. Individuals are allowed one vote per day and can cast their vote for Slaggert or Bischel here.
