Dec. 13, 1999
NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Erich Braun (Frankfurt, Germany), the 1999 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, was selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas All-Mideast Region third team.
As a freshman, Braun led the Irish in scoring with nine goals and six assists (24 points). He was the first Notre Dame players to earn one of the BIG EAST’s four major player-of-the-year awards. In addition to being selected the league’s rookie of the year, Braun also was named to the conference’s all-rookie team, which marked the second consecutive year the Irish have placed someone on that squad.
Braun was one of six Notre Dame players to start all 20 games. He was third in scoring in BIG EAST matches and ranked seventh overall in that category. In 11 league matches, he tallied seven goals and dished off three assists for 17 points. His 17 points set the BIG EAST rookie single-season scoring record.
Braun garnered BIG EAST rookie-of-the-week honors once in ’99. He ended the campaign with seven goals and six assists in the final 12 games of the season. He had two game-winning goals and three multiple-point games. He twice had two goals in a game – versus Syracuse and Providence.
The ’99 season marked the second consecutive year that the Irish were led in scoring by a freshman. Notre Dame finished the recent campaign with an 8-9-3 mark and 4-5-2 record in BIG EAST play.
