Dec. 8, 2011
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame’s Brendan King and Aaron Maund are among a group of 52 seniors invited to take part in the 2012 adidas Major League Soccer (MLS) Player Combine, which will again be held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at Central Broward Regional Park from Jan. 6-10, concluding two days prior to the MLS SuperDraft.
King (Naperville, Ill.), a midfielder, played in all 18 matches this season for the Fighting Irish and he tallied four points on one goal and two assists. For his career, King played in 81 games, including 39 starts, and notched 26 points on six goals and 14 assists.
Maund (Dorchester, Mass.) was a first-team all-BIG EAST selection this season. The central defender played every possible minute during the 2011 campaign and registered two assists in addition to helping the Irish post six shutouts. He was a starter in all 77 matches in which he played during his Fighting Irish career and was a three-time all-BIG EAST performer and earned all-region honors twice. Maund, an Irish team captain during his senior season, accumulated nine points on two goals and five assists during his stellar four-year career.
Notre Dame has produced 20 MLS draft picks, including 18 since Bobby Clark took over the reins of the program in 2001.
Coaches and technical staffs from all 19 MLS clubs, including 2012 expansion side Montreal Impact, will be in attendance to scout the top talent at the 17th annual player combine. The list of participating players, as determined by a select panel of college coaches in conjunction with MLS coaches and technical staffs, will be announced in December.
Matches at the combine will not be open to the public and media will be required to apply for accreditation to attend the games.
For the eighth consecutive year, the MLS SuperDraft will be held in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention, and take place on Jan. 12, at the Kansas City Convention Center. The first round of the SuperDraft will be broadcast live on ESPN2 beginning at noon (ET).
This year, the MLS SuperDraft will include two rounds and 38 overall selections, with the Montreal Impact selecting first overall.
The next eight selections are from teams that did not qualify for the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs beginning with the team with fewest 2011 regular season points (3 points per win, one point per tie). The remaining eight positions are ranked by fewest regular season points among the teams that were eliminated in the same round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.
A four-round Supplemental Draft will take place via conference call on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012.
