Brian Giordano Selected By Boston Cannons In Major League Lacrosse Draft

June 16, 2005

Midfielder Brian Giordano (Princeton, N.J./Hun School), who graduated last month after four years as a starter for the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team, was selected by the Boston Cannons as the 23rd overall pick in the 2005 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Collegiate Draft earlier this month. He became the fifth Irish player taken in the league’s rookie draft since MLL was established in 2001.

Giordano completed a career in which he scored 55 goals and notched 26 assists for 80 total points. He played in 48 of the 50 Notre Dame games over the past four seasons, starting 45 of them in the midfield. Giordano also had 61 ground balls and 10 man-up goals.

In his final season, he served as one of the team’s four captains and started all 11 games, finishing third on the team – which ranked fourth in the nation in scoring (11.91 per game) – in goals (15), while also accounting for four assists and 15 ground balls. He led Notre Dame with a career-high 74 shots, while also sharing the team lead in extra-man scores (5) on a man-up unit that finished fourth in Division I with a conversion rate of 43.6%.

Giordano was the lone ND player with multiple game-winning goals, and both of those came in big Irish triumphs. The first was in a 9-7 victory against #10 North Carolina in The First 4 invitational in front of a crowd of 7,182 in the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The second game-winner came in Giordano’s final collegiate home game, when he tallied his fifth goal of the game 2:42 into overtime to hand the Irish a thrilling 14-13 overtime win against league rival Air Force, while a facility-record crowd of 1,305 looked on.

In his career, Giordano scored multiple goals on 15 occasions and had multiple points 19 times. He was a first-team all-Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) selection in both 2003 and ’04.

A native of Princeton, N.J., Giordano came to Notre Dame after a prep career that saw him finish as the Hun School’s career scoring leader (262 points). He led his squad to the 1998 state championship and was an all-New Jersey selection in both of his final two campaigns.

Giordano graduated in May from the Mendoza College of Business with a degree in marketing.

He was the first ND player taken in the MLL Collegiate Draft since Devin Ryan was the 19th overall selection by the Bridgeport Barrage in 2002. See the chart below for all former Irish players taken in that draft.

The Cannons have started the 2005 season with three consecutive victories to climb atop the National Division of the MLL. Boston will be featured on the league’s ESPN2 game of the week three more times this season: June 28 vs. New Jersey (5 p.m. EDT), July 26 vs. Philadelphia (4 p.m. EDT), and August 9 vs. Long Island (4 p.m. EDT).
