EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Notre Dame doubles team of junior Brook Buck and sophomore Kelcy Tefft moved into the main draw finals, while freshmen Cosmina Ciobanu and Colleen Rielley each advanced into the quarterfinals of the singles draw in the 2006 ITA Midwest Championships on Sunday.
Buck and Tefft cruised into the semifinals with an 8-2 rout of Lubica Nadasska and Callan Smith of Illinois-Chicago. The Irish duo’s match with Jenny Kuehn and Chisako Sugiyama of Michigan was the complete opposite. Buck and Tefft outlasted the Wolverine squad, 9-8 (3). Buck and Tefft improved to 8-2 on the season and will face Georgia Rose and Alexis Prousis of Northwestern for the doubles main draw title on Monday.
Sophomore Katie Potts and Rielley, as well as Ciobanu and freshman Kali Krisik, each reached the quarterfinals, but both teams fell short of the semifinals. Potts and Rielley lost to Kuehn and Sugiyama of Michigan, 8-6, while Rose and Prousis beat Ciobanu and Krisik, 8-2. The losses were the first of the season for each doubles team. Both duos are now 6-1 on the season.
While Rielley and Ciobanu both lost in doubles, each was victorious in their respective singles match. Rielley knocked off Nazlie Ghazal of Northwestern, 6-4, 6-3, while Ciobanu got past Beatrix Csordes of DePaul, 7-6 (7), 6-2. Rielley is now 9-1 on the season and Ciobanu is 8-1.
Senior Christian Thompson lost her quarterfinal match to Mili Veselinovic of Iowa, 6-3, 6-2.
