CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of Notre Dame women’s golf team got off to a slow start on the first day of the three-day Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational at the UNC Finley Golf Course. The Irish are currently in 18th place of the 18 teams on the course with a score of 305, 17 over par.
Vanderbilt claimed the No. 1 spot after the first 18 holes of the tournament with a score of 285, three under par. Duke (286) finished in second place, Auburn (291) in third place and Mississippi (292) and Oklahoma (292) are tied for fourth to round out the top five teams.
Sophomore Talia Campbell led the Irish for the day and posted a one-over-par score of 73. Individually, Campbell tied for 22nd place in the 96-golfer field after putting together a consistent round–she made par on 14 holes and added one birdie.
Coming in second on the Irish roster was junior Ashley Armstrong, tied for 47th individually with a score of 75 (+3) and that included two birdies.
Senior Kristina Nhim and freshman Jordan Ferreira carded 78 (+6) and 79 (+7), respectively. Junior Kelli Oride closed in 93rd place and her score of 82 (+10) did not count toward the Notre Dame team total in the five-count-four scoring format.
The second round of the Tar Heel Invitational gets underway for the Irish off the 10th tee Saturday at 9 a.m. Be sure to check UND.com at the end of each day as the Irish look to make strides in the standings.
