Feb. 23, 2015

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After posting another impressive week at the plate to help the University of Notre Dame baseball team run its winning streak to six games, sophomore second baseman Cavan Biggio has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week.

He is first Irish baseball player to receive the honor since joining the league prior to the 2014 season.

In Notre Dame’s four-game sweep of Incarnate Word, Villanova and Northwestern this past weekend at the Irish Alamo Invitational, Biggio recorded remarkable splits of .533/.733/.667 and led the team in hits (8), RBI (6) and walks (5) while tying for the team lead in doubles (2).

Against Villanova, he got the Irish on the scoreboard by blasting a two-RBI double on a 0-2 count to put Notre Dame up 2-0. One day later, the Houston, Texas native hit another two-RBI double on a 0-2 count against Northwestern to push Notre Dame’s lead to 6-3 late in the game.

Biggio, who is first or tied for first in the ACC in average (.516), hits (16), triples (2), doubles (6) and runs (11) and second or tied for second in total bases (26), on-base percentage (.625) and slugging percentage (.839), has been a big catalyst in Notre Dame’s 7-1 start, which features it’s longest winning streak since early in the 2013 season.

A standout on defense in addition to his production at the plate, Biggio is perfect in 42 chances this season and has helped turn five double plays.

Biggio and the Irish continue their early-season road trip next weekend at the third annual USA Baseball-Irish Classic in Cary, North Carolina at the impressive USA Baseball National Training Complex. The Irish will play East Carolina (5:35 p.m. Friday), Seattle (1:05 p.m. Saturday) and Penn State (11:05 a.m. Sunday) at the three-day tournament.
