COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The accolades keeping piling up for Chris Guiliano. Earlier this week, the junior from outside of Philadelphia was named to the 2023-24 U.S. Men’s National Team in the 100 freestyle. He is one of 94 athletes to make the cut, including 27 newcomers. The average age of the group is just 21.7 years old.
“The 2023-24 National Team roster truly showcases the depth of American swimming,” USA Swimming National Team Managing Director Lindsay Mintenko said in a press release. “A young group of emerging swimmers will learn from veteran leaders as the athletes prepare for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Swimming and the Olympic Games next summer.”
The selection criteria for the team is as follows:
- The athlete must be registered with USA Swimming and be in good standing.
- The times considered are the top-six in each individual Olympic event. They must be from a USA Swimming, FINA-approved or international competition.
- The athlete’s fastest time will be used, but it cannot be from a relay lead-off, swim-off or intermediate split.
- The time must have been achieved between Jan. 1 and Sept. 9, 2023
Of the other men to make the team in the 100 free, two others are juniors in college like Guiliano: Jack Alexy (Cal ’25) and Macguire McDuff (Florida ’25). Ryan Held (NC State ’18) and Matt King (Texas Ford Aquatics) also earned a spot in the 100 free. In total, 46 USA Swimming clubs and 22 states are represented on the team. There are 12 American record holders and six world record holders (LCM).
