Westbeld went to the Chicago Sky, and King will join the Los Angeles Sparks

NEW YORK — Sonia Citron is headed to Washington.

On Monday, the former Notre Dame guard was selected No. 3 overall by the Washington Mystics at the 2025 WNBA Draft in Manhattan. Citron is the 21st WNBA Draft selection in Notre Dame history and the 11th to be chosen in the opening round.

“I’m really really excited,” Citron said following being drafted. “I think it’s an amazing opportunity, and it’s somewhere I can try to make an impact and learn from the amazing players who are already there.”

Citron’s name is a mainstay in the Notre Dame record books, as she is the only player in program history to record 1700 points, 700 rebounds and 300 assists. She recorded 1774 points (11th), made 173 triples (eighth) and finished with a lifetime free throw percentage of 84.3 (fifth). She set the program record in the latter category last season with a mark of 91.2.

Additionally, Citron was a three-time All-ACC Selection, earned All-America Honorable Mention status in both 2023 and 2025, was a 2025 Cheryl Miller Award finalist, and was the 2022 ACC Rookie of the Year. She also helped lead Notre Dame to an ACC Tournament title in 2024 and regular season titles in both 2023 and 2025.

Citron joins a Mystics team in the midst of rebuilding, providing the 6-1 wing with the opportunity to make an instant impact. The team from the nation’s capital also drafted USC’s Kiki Iriafen and Kentucky’s Georgia Amoore in the first round as well. Citron is the second player in Notre Dame history drafted by the Mystics, joining Natalie Novosel in 2012 (No. 8 overall).

While Citron is headed to the East Coast, Maddy Westbeld is staying regional.

On Monday, the former Notre Dame forward was selected by the Chicago Sky with the No. 16 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. She is the 23rd WNBA Draft selection in Notre Dame history and joins Sonia Citron in this draft class, as the wing went No. 3 overall to the Washington Mystics.

Westbeld scored 1,710 points in a Notre Dame uniform, which ranks 13th in program history. She also notched 940 rebounds (seventh in program history), 145 blocks (eighth in program history), and is tied for third in program history with 138 starts in an Irish uniform.

The 6-3 forward is a three-time All-ACC selection and was the 2021 ACC Rookie of the Year. She also helped lead Notre Dame to an ACC Tournament title in 2024 and regular season titles in both 2023 and 2025.

A third Irish player joined the WNBA ranks on Monday.

Former Notre Dame forward Liatu King was selected with the No. 3 pick in the third round, going No. 28 overall in the 2025 WNBA Draft to the Los Angeles Sparks. King is the 23rd WNBA Draft selection in Notre Dame history. She joins Sonia Citron and Maddy Westbeld in this draft class, as the wing went No. 3 overall to the Washington Mystics and the forward went No. 16 overall to the Chicago Sky.

King made an immeasurable impact on the program despite just one season in South Bend. A native of Washington, D.C., King broke the single-season rebounding record with 10.4 per game, a mark previously held by Jessica Shepard. She also notched 342 boards on the year, good for fourth in program history.

A native of Washington, D.C., King finished her collegiate career with 1,549 points and 1,172 rebounds. Over her career, she averaged 11.1 points and 8.4 boards every time she took the court.
