CHICAGO – So nice, she did it twice. Incoming Notre Dame women’s basketball freshman Sonia Citron was announced as the 2021 recipient of the Gatorade New York Player of the Year. A feat she also accomplished her junior season.
Citron’s senior year stats at The Ursuline School were nothing short of elite. The New York native averaged an impressive 26.3 ppg, 11.2 rpg, 5 apg and 3 spg.
She led the Koalas to a perfect 14-0 record, ending her prep career on a 38-game winning streak.
Citron continues to stockpile achievements and honors. Earlier in the week she was named to the 2021 Jordan Brand Classic, and right before that she qualified for the USA U19 World Cup team.
She’s also picked up 2021 McDonald’s All-America honors, along with being named a 2021 WBCA All-American.
Two-time winner Citron joins Gatorade New York Girls Basketball Players of the Year Celeste Taylor (2018-19, Long Island Lutheran High School), Emily Engstler (2017-18, St. Francis Preparatory School), and Andra Espinoza-Hunter (2016-17, Ossining High School), among the state’s list of former award winners.
