Bio

Former Notre Dame All-America distance runner Jim Murphy (’49) continues to serve the Monogram Club board in the role of director emeritus, after serveral years on the board in a number of roles (including a three-year term on the board of directors and stints as an advisor and legal counsel).

Murphy was a founding partner of the Carroll, Kelly and Murphy law firm (in 1966), specializing in litigation and estate planning. He earlier had served in the Coast Guard from 1952-54 before running his own law practice from 1954-66 in Warren, R.I.

He was a trustee of the Portsmouth Abbey School for 15 years (’74-’90) and served a trustee at St. Mary’s Church for 25 years, in addition to being chair of the board of trustees at St. Philomena School.

Murphy earned All-America honors in cross country after placing 14th at the 1948 NCAA meet. Originally from Cranston, R.I., he graduated in 1949 with a degree in sociology and went on to earn his law degree from Georgetown in 1952.

He and his wife Corinne reside in Austin, Texas. They are the parents of nine children: sons James, John and Cornelius ’94 and daughters Mary Ellen, Sheila, Kathleen, Eileen, Patricia and Meghan.
