Marnie Stahl 2021-22 Women's Rowing Staff

Previously the Associate Head Coach of Women’s Rowing, Marnie Stahl has helped lead the Notre Dame rowing program to unprecedented success since setting foot on campus in the fall of 2005.

Beginning her career at Notre Dame as the program’s associate coach, Stahl took over the associate head coach role in the fall of 2015 after Joe Schlosberg left Notre Dame to become Navy’s head coach. While the duo of Schlosberg and Stahl were together under Irish head coach Martin Stone they earned Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) South Region Assistant Coaching Staff of the Year honors in 2013-14 before becoming a finalist for the CRCA National Assistant Coaching Staff of the Year award.

During an impressive eight-year run from 2006-13 that featured eight BIG EAST Championships, Stone, Schlosberg and Stahl earned six BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year trophies.

Notre Dame put together another outstanding season in 2014-15, as the Irish finished second in the elite Atlantic Coast Conference for the second consecutive season before qualifying for their fourth straight NCAA Championships. There the Irish recorded a 16th-place finish after scoring 41 points.

The Irish tied a program record with a ninth place finish overall at the 2014 NCAA regatta at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis to wrap up a highly productive 2013-14 season. All three Irish boats qualified for petite final appearances for the first time in team history.

In each of Stahl’s first eight seasons as an assistant with the program, Notre Dame captured the BIG EAST Championship team title, and owned the longest active streak in the league with 10 straight conference crowns from 2004-13.

Two of Stahl’s boats claimed gold during Notre Dame’s final trip to the BIG EAST Championship in 2013, as the third varsity four and third varsity eight won grand final races at the West Windsor, New Jersey regatta. The Irish second varsity four launch picked up a silver medal after a runner-up finish. Notre Dame scored a BIG EAST Championship record 151 points on its way to winning the conference title for the 10th consecutive time.

All three of Stahl’s boats dominated on the conference level in ’12, with all three winning gold in the Grand Finals en route to the Irish winning five of six possible finals for the 14-point victory. She and Stone and Schlosberg were awarded BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year for the fifth time since 2006 as a result of the success.

Stahl’s boats brought home several victories again in 2011, claiming the gold in both the third varsity eight and varsity four at the BIG EAST Championship. Along with this, the varsity four boat earned BIG EAST Crew of the Week honors after finishing second in the Group B Finals at the Lake Natoma Invite, including capturing a preliminary heat win over the nationally ranked Stanford four boat.

The 2010 season was a big success for Stahl and the novice eight boats, as they racked up six race wins on the campaign. Most notable accomplishments included a gold-medal winning performance at the BIG EAST Championship and berth in the Grand Final at the Central/South Region Sprints.

During her three seasons working with the varsity four crews, Stahl’s boats enjoyed great success. At the 2008 BIG EAST Championships, Notre Dame’s varsity four and second varsity four crews won gold medals as the Irish swept all six races en route to winning its fifth consecutive crown. In addition, Notre Dame’s open four crew won the Petite Final at the Central/South Region Championship that same season.

Overall, Notre Dame’s varsity four boats won five gold medals at the BIG EAST Championships under Stahl. In 2009, the novice four crew captured BIG EAST gold in winning the school’s six consecutive conference crown.

She has also been part of two of the most successful campaigns in school history when Notre Dame finished ninth in 2006 and 12th in 2007 at the NCAA Championships after earning back-to-back berths in the team competition. The four crews advanced to the Petite Finals of the NCAAs and finished 11th overall on both occasions. The 2012 Irish returned to NCAA Championship, earning a 15th-place finish after being led by an eighth-place showing by the varsity four.

Prior to coming to Notre Dame as an assistant coach, she spent two years as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Michigan.

Stahl began her two-year stint with the Michigan program in September 2003 following four years as head coach for the St. Ursula Academy Rowing Club in Toledo, Ohio (August 1999 through July 2003). At Michigan, she served as the primary coach for the varsity four boats and helped the program achieve success at the national level. In 2004, the Wolverines finished third in the team competition at the NCAA Championships and then followed that up with an eighth-place finish in 2005.

A member of the Toledo Rowing Club since August of 1991, Stahl has served that organization in a number of capacities and has been instrumental in the long-range strategic planning of the program. She was named president of the Board of Trustees in January of 2005 after having been a board member since January of 2003.

She was head coach of the women’s collegiate summer program in 2003 and served as head coach of the women’s masters team from June of 2000 until September of 2001.

Stahl graduated cum laude from the University of Charleston in Charleston, West Virginia with a bachelor’s of science degree in sports medicine and pre-professional studies in May of 1999. In addition, she has done graduate coursework in exercise physiology at the University of Toledo.

A four-year letterwinner at Charleston, she rowed with the novice and varsity four boats as a freshman, the lightweight eight boat as a sophomore and the varsity eight crew in both her junior and senior seasons.

Beginning in August of 2001, Stahl was employed by the Health Fitness Corporation. She began as a health fitness specialist (August 2001-September 2002) at the UAW-Ford Health and Fitness Center in Dearborn, Mich. She also was the program manager for the employee fitness center at the Owen Corning Headquarters in Toledo, Ohio, a position she was named to in January of 2003.

A native of Toledo, Stahl holds a Level III certificate from the United States Rowing Association and is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a strength and conditioning specialist.
