Scott Wingo 2020-21 Baseball Staff

During Wingo’s second season in 2021, the outfield defense continued to shine for the Irish and the team as a whole as they led the NCAA in fielding percentage at the end of the regular season (0.985). The outfielders committed just three errors over the course of the season and Spencer Myers and Ryan Cole both finished the season with perfect fielding percentages.

Notre Dame was still aggressive on the base paths in 2021, as they racked up 65 steals over the 47 games played. Myers led the team with 15 steals and moved into eighth all-time in program history with 56 career steals. Myers finished the season ranked fifth in the ACC in steals per game (0.32). Brooks Coetzee was another outfielder that had a successful season on the base paths as he finished second on the team with a career-best 11 steals.

In Wingo’s first season with the Irish in 2020, there was a drastic fielding improvement from the outfielders. The Irish outfielders committed just one error out of 84 opportunities for a .988 fielding percentage. As a team the Irish finished the year with a .971 fielding percentage, which ranked fifth in the ACC.

On the base paths, the Irish were aggressive in each game and held high marks in the ACC and NCAA. Spencer Myers finished the season ranked first in steals (15) and steals in a game (6) while the Irish as a team led the ACC in steals per game with 2.67. The six steals in a game was the most by an Irish player in the last 14 seasons.

Prior to Notre Dame, Wingo was the volunteer assistant at Jacksonville with current assistant coach Rich Wallace during the 2018 season. He coached the infielders while also assisting with the hitters and base runners. During his tenure with the Dolphins, Wingo guided three infielders to first team Atlantic Sun honors. Jacksonville led the conference in batting average, hits, on-base percentage, runs batted in, and runs scored. Second in the Atlantic Sun in fielding percentage, fewest errors made.

Wingo played college ball at South Carolina, where he was a four-year letterwinner from 2008-11 and played on both national championship teams in 2010 & 2011. In his senior year Wingo was named captain of the team, earned All-SEC First Team honors, and was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2011 College World Series. He also earned SEC All-Defensive team honors twice. His 254 career games with the Garnet & Black are the second-highest total in school history.

Wingo was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2011 MLB Draft in the 11th Round and spent three years in Dodgers organization, where he hit .249 through 261 career games with a .360 slugging percentage and a .390 on-base percentage. After his time with the Dodgers he served as a student assistant with South Carolina in 2015, coaching the infielders and hitters, then served as an assistant coach at the Wilmington Sharks, a member of the Coastal Plain League.

The 2016 & 2017 seasons he served as an assistant coach with North Greenville University while earning his Masters degree, and he was also promoted to head coach of the Wilmington Sharks during the 2016 and 2017 summer season.

Wingo played high school ball at Mauldin High School, where he was named to the 2007 South Carolina AAAA All-State team and was a member of the 2007 SC/NC All-Star Select team.
