COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Seniors Lauren Connelly (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness H.S.) and Kristina Stastny (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph’s Academy) won 8-2 over a team from Duke Sunday to claim the “A” flight consolation championship in the Maryland Invitational at the Tennis Center at College Park. It was the second such title in as many days, as Stastny took the backdraw championship of the “A” flight in singles on Saturday.
The pair of Irish seniors lost just two games en route to defeating Lauren Archer and Parker Goyer, who both saw time at No. 3 doubles last spring for the Blue Devils. Connelly and Stastny – who had never played together prior to this weekend – lost in the opening round of the main draw to the team of Aimee and Janet Kim from Yale, but then bounced back to upset the 60th-ranked team in the nation, LSU’s Lauren Seaman and Tiffany Tucker, on Saturday in consolation play by an 8-4 score.
Connelly was in consolation singles action on Sunday, as well. She defeated Janet Kim of Yale 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Another Irish senior, Kelly Nelson (St. Petersburg, Fla./Shorecrest Preparatory School), also was scheduled to go for a consolation championship, but her match in the “B” flight against Duke’s Parker Goyer was not played. She returned to action this weekend for the first time since November of 2003, having missed all of last season due to injury.
Next weekend will see the Irish travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Hoosier Classic, which will run from Friday through Sunday at Indiana University.
